Free Ragtime Music by Scott Joplin
Ragtime music, or as it is often called; Rag-time, is a style of music that was very popular between 1897 and 1918. What makes it so special is the syncopated rhythm together with a “chopped” or "ragged", rhythm pattern in the bass.
Ragtime was a dance music form in the red-light districts of American cities such as St. Louis and New Orleans before it was being printed as popular sheet music for piano. Scott Joplin is the most famous composer of rag-time pieces for piano, and his style of writing has been mentioned as the American version of minuets, mazurkas or waltzes. This music also influenced and inspired classical composers like Claude Debussy and Igor Stravinsky. Rag-time piano music should be played relatively slowly, but is definitely not for beginners. It may give you a worthy goal to work for, though! Here I have selected some of Scott Joplin's most popular and somewhat easier rag-time pieces. The sheet music is in the public domain, so you just have to print and play! Please note: You will need Adobe Reader (the latest version is recommended) installed on your computer in order to open these piano notes. You can get Adobe Reader for free here (a new window will open so you can download it without leaving this page). Have fun!

A really great edition is this: Scott Joplin at the Piano , which is edited by Maurice Hinson. This edition also includes a guide to ragtime history, style and interpretation. Since I recently bought it myself- I highly recommend it!
