Famous Piano Players

Famous piano players; Watch unique video clips with the most legendary virtuoso pianists of of classical music.

Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860 - 1941)

Ignacy Jan Paderewski was a Polish pianist born in 1860. He became one of Poland's most famous pianists and composers. His own compositions are well known, but mostly he is remembered by his Chopin interpretations.

Paderewski was also very involved in politics, and after Poland’s independence in 1918, he became the Prime Minister and Secretary of foreign affairs of Poland.

Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873 - 1943)

Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninov(also spelled Rachmaninoff), born in 1873 was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor. He was one of the greatest pianists and composers of the 20th century and, as a composer, one of the last representatives of late Russian Romanticism.

Following the revolution in 1917, Rachmanninov left Russia and lived in Switzerland and USA between his concert tours. Rachmanninov had large hands, it is said he could cover the interval of a thirteenth (which means his hand span was at least 12 inches).

Josef Lhevinne (1874-1944)

Joseph Arkadievich Lhévinne was born 1874 in Russia. He and his wife Rosina Bessie (also a concert pianist) moved to Berlin in 1907 where Lhévinne became famous as one of the greatest pianists and teachers of his day.

In 1919 the couple moved to New York City, where Lhévinne and his wife continued giving concerts and teaching piano at the Juilliard School. Lhévinne wrote a short book in 1924 that I can really recommend: Basic Principles in Pianoforte Playing (Dover Books on Music)
