What do we play with our right hand while our right hand is playing the lead part?

What do we play with our right hand while our right hand is playing the lead part?

Maria's answer:
When playing chord piano you play a melody (lead part)and chords. You can choose to play the melody in your right hand and the chords in your left, which is the most common,or switch and play the melody in your left while comping with chords in your right.

So to answer your question, the right hand playing the lead part plays the melody. It can be improvised and embellished of course. You can also add parts of the chords played in your left hand for a richer sound.

What do we play with our left hand while our right hand is playing the lead part?

Maria's answer:
(Please see also my previous answer.) When playing chord piano you will usually use your left hand for playing the chords, or part of the chords while the right hand plays the lead part, or the melody and sometimes parts of the chords as well.

However, with your left hand you could also play an interesting bass line depending on the style of the music. Walking bass for example, or a second melody supporting or contrasting the main melody.

The chords can be played in a multitude of ways in your left hand, blocked, broken or arpeggiated for beautiful accompaniments.
